Hi everyone,

I was looking through a recent issue of "Sail" magazine, and I saw an ad for "BoatWorks" magazine ... has anyone seen this magazine?

I got the impression from the ad that it is "Sail" magazine's attempt to compete with "Good Old Boat" ... 'don't know if that's the case or not, but the articles sounded very much like something you'd expect to see in "Good Old Boat."

I have subscribed to the magazine since it came out and it offers some good advice on doing repairs. My one knock with it is that people who do their own repairs seem to be driven there mostly by budget constraints and some of the repairs they suggest seem focused on those with unlimited budgets. Probably due to it being a SAIL magazine offshoot. They do have a lot of advice from repair specialists and seem to be refining their articles a bit towards a more useful resource. I have subscribed to it since it first came out, which was in the spring, it comes out quarterly. As compared to SAIL, it is all business...no articles on cruising or visiting exotic places, lots on repairs, upgrades, refurbishing, and basic DIY stuff. They do have articles called "Reviews" where they test various products...in the most recent summer edition, they tested multitools, a sander, first aid kits, the Islander 36 and the Cape Dory Typhoon.

It has lots of good information and is well worth the price.

I've subscribed since it first came out, and for the price, its great. I've also seen in on newsstands. I'm a novice, so the articles are extremely helpful in learning about various components of boats, and takes the fear of DIY away!

I just grabbed a copy last night. It was that or G.O.B. but the latter was $7, so I went with the newbie and so far I like it.

I like this magazine, but I find it awfully slick for my tastes. I have been subscribing to G.O.B. for the past few year, and I really do prefer their style. JMHO

Good Old Boat is a classic - BoatWorks will never replace it. G.O.B. is a bit pricey, but every issue is worth keeping. BW is a bit more lightweight, but good inspiration for a new do-it-yourselfer.
