I've noticed that my Nissan 8 outboard seems to be leaking exhaust forward (towards the boat) right at the cavitation plate. It looks like there may be a seal that's failed, as it's at the joint of two pieces of motor. In the bottom piece, exhaust is expelled backwards into the water. Should this be a matter of urgent concern? I note that the motor also squeals some--It sounds more like rubber than metal that's squealing.

Thanks,

I have a nissan 9.8 two cycle which I bought last year. I noticed that same thing right away when I started using it. Actually, I pulled the motor out after a few uses and noticed the exhaust "oil" on the front. Then I put it back on the boat and watched it in action. I have been using it for just over a year and have had no problems with it. Very strange and concerning, but when I pulled the motor to change the lower oil, I noticed that there is a small indent in the metal. Looks to me like it's designed to do it.

Bruce,
I have an Tohatsu 8 (same as Nissan), a 1994 model, which has worked flawlessly for 10 years now. Mine has the same exhaust venting you describe. I think it is designed that way to drain water when motor is raised to prevent freezing damage in cold weather use. I also believe I have the same odd squealing, whinning sound you describe. Is only appearent in a certain narrow low band of RPMs. Have not tried to find the cause. Has not caused any problem.
