The admiral is noticing it is hard to keep the cabin floor clean, as dirt, crumbs etc are very visible on the fiberglass floor. Its also hard to clean the tread pattern on the fiberglass. We were wondering if marine carpet would help hide some of that... (Not that it wouldnt be vacuumed occasionally!)
Are there any experiences about carpet in a sailboat? I really do not want to glue it down, I was hoping I could find a solution that uses a non-skid backing on the carpet - would this be safe with a 15-20 deg heel?
I have a feeling the Admiral (and I) will have to live with a few crumbs but I thought I'd ask! I searched for carpet but didnt find any historical threads on this...
I purchased the carpet option on my 2005 WK. My older Catalina 22 also had carpeting which helped me decide to purchase the option on the new boat. I LIKE the carpet, however it does need to be cleaned occasionally. I have placed a floor mat under the ladder to provide protection from the majority of wear. The factory carpet is fastened to the floor via snaps and is help in place quite well. I can assure you that at 20 degrees of heel the carpet stays in place. (Much better than other things in my boat! :) ).
The only 'complaint' I have RE the carpet is Catalina made a couple of booboo's (IMHO) in cutting the carpet resulting in a few 'weird' corners around the mast step. I would have thought that they would have started over again but who knows, maybe there was a reason.
The carpet on my 1983 '22 was still in good shape when I sold the boat so I am looking forward to it lasting here as well.
I just have a 3'x4' throw rug, it don't cover the whole floor but catches most of the crums. I just take it up on deck and shake it out when it get dirty. I haven't had any problems slipping. But now that I have said that...
I just went to Wal-Mart and got a 6X10 carpet for $15 and cut it to fit the cabin floor. I then took 1” edging and sewed it all the way around the edge. Once in place it doesn’t slip at all and if it gets wet I just pull it up and throw it in the cockpit for a while and it will dry in an hour or two. Looks good easy to clean and is a custom fit.
we have the teak and holly floor in our 99 C250. but our old boat had carpet. when it got dirty i went to home depot. they sell carpet runners with rubber backing, kind of like indoor outdoor carpet by the foot, cut to any length you want. you can cut it to fit arounnd anything you need to with a pair of scissors. it comes in several colors and is inexpensive and it stays in place.
Here is a picture of my $15 carpet. It doesn't even want to slip anywhere. With the ruff floor and the ruff carpet backing it is as if it were glued to the floor.
