Ever wonder why? They're known for good torque at low rpm's. Seems to me that they'd be a trifle safer, due to the low volatility of diesel fuel vs gasoline. Just wondering.

No diesel outboards? Sure there are! Been around for a while. There was even a 2-stroke one:

The robust construction needed to handle the high compression ratios needed by the diesel combustion cycle make the engines very heavy relative to gasoline engines.

That said, there are some diesel outboards (a bit more modern than the above) available... not commonly found in the USA though. I remember a PR 'stunt' from a decade or so ago where a team circumnavigated a small (25'?) RIB using a pair of diesel outboards. (They were Yanmar I think)

One of the folks in a neighboring slip to us has an engine that looks very similar to the second picture in Leon's post. Their boat is a Clipper Marine 26. I always thought it looked unusual, maybe now I know why.

I use a small diesel engine like that at work on an aircraft servicing cart. It is a neat, but shall I say "double hearing protection required" .

Tom,

I'm into saving what's left of my hearing and use protection when using any diesel/gas machinery about the grounds but it seems to me that if the exhaust is submerged it will mitigate the need for hearing protection. Or at least I hope so. Still should such a product appear your suggestion should be right up there with things to consider before purchase.

good point re: exhaust. Probably leaves a real mess in the air, or in the water.. Probably not EPA2008 compliant.
