My new engine is finally mounted. I also purchased a remote control kit from Honda for the motor, but guess what, it doesn't fit the 2002 motor. Come to find out that for some reason the possibility that someone would want to convert to the remote control instead of buying the Honda with it already installed must have surprised them. Anyway, they are now scurring around trying to develop a remote control for this engine...so this is just a buyer beware and make sure if you are buying this engine and would like remote control, you should either buy it that way, or check with Honda to see if they are going to provide a coversion kit. My Honda dealership is working on a work around and will install it for free.

At least the engine is functional without the remote.

FYI, I'm pretty sure Honda no longer makes 9.9 or 8 hp models specifically set up for remote controls (as they used to). If they also don't have a conversion kit, we're stuck--but I had just planned on reaching over the transom. At least we don't have C-27s with the stern lazarette to reach over...

According to the Honda Marine website, http://www.honda-marine.com/hmframeset.htm, they sell two remotes for the BF9.9(electric or manual start) and one remote for the BF5/BF8(manual start/manual choke only). By chance do you guys have a BF8 outboard with electric start?

I have a 2002 HONDA BF9.9D with electric start. The remote control on the Honda web site is for previous years. They do make, from the factory, a 9.9 with remote control, but I don't think you can get the tiller handle and some other stuff I thought might come in handy some day.

My dealer told me they discontinued the remote control 9.9 in 2002--much to his chagrin. Several sailers (me not included) were looking for it.
