I'm interested in replacing my 'dining' table with something nore visually appealing... (Teak, with fiddles). Has anyone done such a swap? Any ideas on where to locate such a table? (Or do I have to take out a second mortgage to purchase a custom-made piece?) My boat ha a 'traditional' interior...(Table folds up against forward bulkhead, sits athwartships between port and starboard setees.
Thanks in advance, Joe Lucero "Dolphin Dreams" '85 S/R, F/K
I understand the need for teak on exteriors, but how much does it matter on the inside? I spent around $85 on teak to rebuilt crib boards and cleaned out the remaining teak at a speciality wood store. Anyone have experience using other woods on interiors?
Just finished replacing my table with a new one I made out of 2 pieces of 16" wide mellamine covered shelving and some mahogany trim that I made.
I shortened the table by about 15" or so and hinged it to another piece on the bulkhead. Now I can easily lower it while underway....even my 7 year old can setup and then stow the table.
Also just finished making a removable cockpit grate out of 2" wide mahogany strips that I then finished with Cetol light.
I'll try and remember to take some pics and post them.
Hey, Joe!!! You just gave me an idea that, if we can engineer correctly, could serve two purposes (at least for owners of traditional interior boats). Think of this : A bulkhead mounted table that could serve as an across-the-cabin support board for a large, mid-cabin bed!!! Right now I have 3/4inch plywood inserts for making into a bed using the existing cushions. They are heavy and take up storage space. A folding table might work here instead, used for two purposes and stored against the bulkhead!! I will take some measurements and see what develops. Anyway, thanks for the idea....
Thank you for all the replies. My intention is (was) to replace the table with one of similar design. The reason for teak or some other exotic wood is to add some interior beauty. The idea of a table serving as a bed platform is intriguing, though...
