I am planning a trip with some friends to Roche Harbor on San Juan Island. First, is it pronounced "roshay" or "roach" or somthing else ? We will be there the first week in Oct. any local knowledge on probable weather conditions then? Also we hope to rent/charter while we are there. Nothing big, say 22 to 26 feet any ideas on possible marina use? Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark
I was there July 2004 for a week, had a good time.
They have annocements at sundown every nite, then a flag take down and then shoot off this cannon.
Check out the web cam www.islandcam.com.
Some people said rowshh and some said roach.
I think they only have kyack rentals and classes early early every morning
just behind our slip.
Could not walk down the dock to our slip at nite with out someone inviting you for a drink or taste some crab.
No bugs at nite couldn't figure that out.
Winds were nice but not every day all day.
Check out there weather channel on the internet.

Also check out Deer harbor across the way. Roach is a nice spot, but I always feel pretty small slipping my C25 into the row of big yachts.
I think Deer harbor has nicer docks & showers, a little store, and some boat rentals. Also has a pool across the street.
To borrow (and bend) from a Jay Lionhart song:
Roach Harbor is country clubs and Oldsmobiles, ties with ducks, and loafers with no socks.
Deer Harbor is chewing gum and Segrams Seven...for jazz freaks bums and beatnicks...

(sorry, in a jazz mode today)

I spent one night on the hook in Deer Harbor in July '99. It seemed like a nice small town. We may stop there again next month. My favorite anchorages, at least of the few that I've seen personally, are Fossil Bay (Sucia Island), Montague (Galiano Island), and Sidney Spit (Sidney Island).
