This Stiletto catamaran and I were the only sailboats on our part of the ICW today. I was sailing using the jib only (my wife's preference) and he had mainsail and jib sheeted in tight and we were both tacking down the river. There was a storm passing through a few miles east of us, no rain for us but the wind picked up quickly and all of a sudden a gust caught him and he flipped. Both crew went in the water, one had possibly cracked ribs and difficulty breathing when the CG and local marine patrol got there. We were the closest boat to him but by the time I pulled in the jib, started the outboard and headed his way, several power boats had arrived on scene. It's about 12' deep where he went over.

Of course, I had to assure my wife that nothing like that could ever happen to our C25.

Steve,
The blow must have not lasted very long, it don't look to bad in the pictures. How did you fair in the gust?

We did fine but with only the headsail up there wasn't much to worry about...I sure wasn't keeping up with that catamaran prior to the capsize.

Interestingly, the Coast Guard also had a boat fire, a disabled boat, another boat with engine trouble and 2 PWC's in trouble all at the same time as this incident. Made for a lot of VHF traffic.

I was curious because I only sail an inland lake if the Coast Guard or state/local patrols charge $$$$ for emergency services rendered at a later time down the road.

Thats your tax dollars at work! Just don't spill any fuel in the water, or run aground on a reef and you should be able to avoid charges from the CG.

I have admired the Stileto many times. By the looks of the bottom of the hulls he must be trailer sailing. Hopefully he wasn't sailing with that forward hatch open, if he was and stuffed the bow just a little bit he could have filled the hull enough to cause the pitch pole/ death roll that we see in the photos. Sad way to spend, what appears to be, a glorious day on the water.
