John Vining and I finished our planned cruise around the Keweenaw Peninsula yesterday. If you recall, I had invited you all to come to the UP of Michigan and enjoy a few days of sailing on Lake Superior. John trailerd up from Sault St Marie Michigan on the 22d and we departed on the 23d. If you have a chart or atlas showing Upper Michigan (the UP)you can trace our route from Chassell Michigan through the Keweenaw Waterway to the North Entry into Lake Superior, then Northeast to Eagle Harbor where we stayed the first night. We then sailed to Copper Harbor and spent the day touring the town and old Fort Wilkens. The next day we sailed around the Keweenaw Peninsula to Lac La Belle ands spent the night. The next day we sailed across Keweenaw Bay to the Huron Islands and Huron Bay where we rafted up the night at Skanee. The final day we sailed to the South entry into the Keweenaw Waterway and back to Chassell.

We had great wind all four days and motored only about six hours during the entire 160 mile trip. On all four days we were posting 6-7 knot speeds over several hour periods. John and I will collaberate on an article for the Main Sheet and John will post a link to his web site with lots of pictures.

We are already planning a cruise in John's sailing area, the North Channel on Lake Huron, for next year. Plan on joining us. John is a super guy and sailer and I'm not so bad either.

I'm finally off Neebish Island for the day and while getting re-supplied I have stopped at the local internet cafe to catch up.
We truly had a great cruise and will post pictures and more as soon as I return from the North Channel. Al put it right as far as the wind was concerned, we had four wonderful days of sailing and the crossing from Lac La Belle to the Huron Islands was one for the books with about 25 miles of open Lake superior crossed in a wonderful 15-20 kt. wind with seas varying at 3-5 ft. perfect for a Catalina 25. With Al's wife Mary trailing by car we had great shore support, especially for that trip to the Keewenaw Mountain Lodge for dinner. It won't be till mid August when I'll be able to post the photos. The Upper Lakes Cruising Group's first cruise was a great success all we have to do is design the right burghee and we will be in business. Thanks again Al for all the pre-planning and work it took to put this together.

Keep your eyes open for postings about the 06 North Channel cruise.
