Wanted: small dinghy motor

I'm looking for a small 2 to 3.5 hp dinghy motor. It has to be in running shape, as I'm somewhat mechanically stupid.
short shaft, of course.

Frank, When you figure you can buy a new Tohatsu for around $550 and what mechanincs charge, New really makes sense when talking about the mini motors. A 10 y/o 3.5 will still fetch 2-300 on ebay. My OB mechanic charges $65 an hour BTW.

I have a 1999 Yamaha 4hp short shaft which I bough from a guy three years ago. I bought it for a 16ft sailboat but I then purchased a 23ft San Juan (and it is too small to use as a backup.) In the mean time, I have run it once to tune it up and one to see if it could push my San Juan (it can't). It is clean/dent free, starts on the first or second pull, is very smooth and the engine has less than 10 hours by me. The first owner was a friend of mine who used it two or three times one season on a square drive canoe for fresh water fishing. (He has since moved on to a twin 175hp on a little bigger hull). Anyway, its sitting in my basement. For $300 (what I paid for it), its yours.

Thanks for your reply. I looked up Yamaha outboards online and saw that they currentlyonly offer a 4 hp 4 stroke which weighs 48 lbs. Maybe they used to have a 2 stroke which would be lighter. I'm interested in somethin in the under 30 lb range, like atgep mentioned.

Frank -
Mine is a two-stroke, so it should be lighter than the 4. The spec weight of mine is 22 lbs. It has an internal tank so it weighs less the more you run it!

Let me know if you want to see pix, i'll snap a few and post them if you are interested. Before I bought this Yamaha 4, I also looked at the Tohatsu and a Briggs and Stratton. You might look at those too.
