HELP!

My dinghy motor has problems. The automatic recoil on the pull cord is stuck and I can't get the cord back into the motor head.

I should mention that this motor is a 1969 Evinrude Lightwin. It may be stupid sentimentality, but it seems like a small problem that could be easily taken care of by someone who knows about such things.

Other than this small set back, that little motor runs great! In fact just the other day I had to tow someone who's brand new Nissan 3.5 HP wasn't working out to his boat!

Anyone know a reputable outboard motor mechanic in or around New York City?

Hi Rich,

I use South Shore Marina at Greenwood Lake. It's about an hour or so away from me in upper Manhattan. I found them because of service needed on my Honda OB and they are the only factory licensed place around. Couldn't believe I had to go so far but in the end I'm glad I did. Jim is the guy you want to see there for repairs and most anything else. He's very knowledgeable and helpful. Ironically they are also a Catalina/MacGregor dealer. Their store has a wide selection of sailboat hardware and rigging equipment too. Here's the website for directions http://www.southshoremarina.com/

They should pay me for such a ringing endorsement.

Another suggestion, much closer, is to try a couple of the places on City Island out by Pelham Bay Park in da Bronx. I can't vouch for anyone there but I did see some signs for OB repair shops last week. I'm heading out there tomorrow to catch some air and I'll ask around to see if I can get some specific places for you.

Thanks for the tip. However, I just spoke to the folks at South Shore Marina and they don't do Evinrude repairs. Funny. I thought a mechanic is a mechanic. Have you ever brought your Toyota to a shop and been told, "Sorry, we only repair Saab?" Oh, well. Still searching . . .

The rewinder spring in the pull starter might have rusted out and broken, or the mechanism might just be clogged with decades of accumulated dust and dirt. You might be able to get it working with just a cleaning and lubrication, but if something inside is broken, you might be looking at a new motor, as I don't think you will find replacement parts anywhere for an Evinrude that old. Are there "junkyards" where old boat motors are recycled, like auto parts junkyards?
