arlyn, i just downloaded the picture of your soft link from trailor sailer. it seems pretty self explanitory, but what type of non flexing line did you use from your ruder to your engine. it almost looks like plastic clothesline. i can see how turning to the right will work because the bungie cord will pull the motor back when you straighten out, but turning to the left is a bit confusing. is it because there is enough tension on the bungie to turn the engine left? it looks like a great idea to me and am anxious to try it. any comments will be appreciated. thanks again...
Yo Ducks; You also have the option of instead of a softlink....make a hardlink. That is what I used for my C250. I found a corner of the motor below the shroud where I could drill and bolt a small triangle shaped plate...then on the point of the tri that points out from it's mounting on the motor I drille a 1/4 hole and inserted a 1/2" bolt, which sticks vertically up about 11/2 ". ( thats the mount on the motor.....Then I made a bracket that bolts to the rudder head upon which i drilled a 1/4" hole and inserted (verticly) a 1/4" bolt. ( that's the mount on the rudder) I straightened the motor and the rudder...took a piece of "1/4" allthread, put a heim joint on each end, dropped one heim over the 1/4" bolt on the motor and dropped the other heim over the 1/4" bolt on the rudder...Put nylock nuts to hold the heim joints down....and voila ..a hardlink that allows the motor and rudder to be in sync at all times. If you are interested I will draw you a sketch and fax it to you. P.S. It works great and there is no excess flex like in the softlink system.
Yo ducks.....I did not drill a 1/4" hole and insert a 1/2" bolt.... That don't work ! everything was 1/4" holes, bolts, heims, and nuts. NOW that makes more sense
The line running from the port side of motor to the rudder is a piece of 1/8 or 5/32 line.
Aft on the rudder, an eye is installed. On the line, attach a small snap hook. When wanting connection, just snap it onto eye...let dangle when not using.
My design requirements were simplicity...and the ability to easily connect-disconnect for raising the motor or for cruising with the motor locked.
This is a very simple system... and as often is the case... simplicity works great.
I used Arlyn's softlink and as stated it works great. Catalina should provide it on the factory boats.
The only problem I have had is that the bungee disentegrates due to the sun. One solution is to coat the bungee with sunblock. I saw this in a SAIL mag and it was reported to make the bungee last 4x.
Sooooo use the softlink, change the $1 bungee each spring and coat it with sunblock.
The Hardlink sounds great also but I would need some details about vibration and also engine rotation.
thank you arlyn, we certainly will give it a try. and thank you to the rest of you that responded. (i like the idea of coating the bungies with sun block. we use an igloo ultra cool 50 cooler on top of the seat behind the wheel to not only store "beverages" but it doubles as a great seat for the capatain!! (perfect height) and we attach it with bungies to the rails to keep it in place... and the bungies fail several times a season due to the sun... will try the sunblock...WISH US LUCK...we are having shore power and a depth finder installed today, hope all goes well.....and if you need pictures of arlyn's invention. go to trailor sailor and click on archives, then click on tips and tricks and you will see it...thanks again....
tray, go to www.trailersailor.com. then click on the left side on "FORUMS". then click on the right side on "ARTICLES & REVIEWS", then scroll down to "RUDDER/MOTOR STEERING, PART 1". and you will see pictures of arlyn's soft link. good luck...
