Anyone want to buy a boat? I may have a 1985 C25, SW for sale! My wife and I attempted to install a Snap-Furl roller furling system, and to make a long story short I now need a new foil (the Snap foil does NOT come apart without shattering once its together!), a new forestay and possibly a new jib halyard. I often hear of CDI furler systems but the sail loft I am using recommeded the Snap Furler. The halyard got all twisted up and ended up wrapping up and mangling the forestay. I didn't install the halyard restrainer and I think that added to it. But I think what was even worse was that my forstay had a couple of "not so straight" parts in it, and I think the foil turns on the forstay (I think that's right?) and ours just didn't turn that easily. We looked at the forestay and it seemed like it would be OK, but I'm not sure that was the best decision. Needless to say, I'm bummed. But, it isn't the first time, and probably won't be the last. We've only had the boat about 3 months and we've been quite successful with other things we've done on it.
Has anyone else had experience with the Snap Furler, and has it worked for you? And, how does one go about affixing a halyard restrainer onto the mast? They didn't include any screws, and I am not able to get inside my mast at all as it's not open. Do I just use stainless steel sheet metal screws? Any sealant or anything else? Thanks!
Dave , I experienced the same exact same problem with the S-F, had to replace the foil, and a head stay. A halyard restrainer can be used, its easy to install if you drop the stick. The key to the S-F is to keep the proper angle off the mast head. The foil cap that keeps the top end flush, is made of plastic and works very poorly. I seem to re-call to prior thread where it was mentioned that this system is under-rated for the Cat 25. If it continues to cause a problem, I going to spend the big bucks and go to the Profurl R25. Jeff, thanks for the encouragement - knowing someone else is in the same "boat." I have a new foil on its way from Massachusetts, and a new forestay enroute from New York (the forestay is coming through my sail loft). I hope to get the forestay before the week is out in order to use my old hanked-on jib so that I can get it in the water at least this weekend. It doesn't disappoint me that I am replacing the forestay as it was a bit questionable anyway, so I guess this is just the impetus to do it. Hopefully I'll get it all set soon.
