Being that I am of Northern descent and have the light hair, light skin, etc. to prove it, I need to find something to block the sun. Just two days in the sun AND wearing SPF 50, my nose is still redder than rudolph's. I like the looks of the bimini tops I see around the marinas, but I am in a limited fund situation and I am looking for ideas to provide some much needed shade. I had forgotten what the water and skin combined can do to your skin.
Shade asside, here are my ideas for skin: -Hat with the flap down over the neck (use to have one back in the 80's that looked like a foreign legion hat) -New sunblock called "Total Block CoTZ SPF 58" -possibly wear more long sleeve shirts. (don't like that idea)
for shade, I was thinking of the different types of cloth, etc. out there that I can use to just create a canopy/umbrella effect.
Previous owner had a thing in the boat that was white material mounted on two poles. overall side is about 4' x 6' but I can not for the life of me figure out how he used it.
I got by for a while with a couple of $5 lawn chair umbrellas. They have a c-clamp for attaching to horizontal or vertical lawn chair tubing, so they clamp to the stanchions pretty well. I finally saved up and bought a bimini, though. The umbrellas fell apart after being banged around for two seasons.
That white mystery material might be a boom tent - something to rig over the boom while anchored or in a slip?
I saw a pic elsewhere on the net that had something that looked like my mystery fabric/assy. It goes over the boom, with the poles perpendicular to the boom. I will try this.

You can make a bimini fairly easy. A regular sewing machine will do it, just make sure you get the right, and new (sharp) needles. Cost saving ideas.....go with aluminum instead of SS....no it's not as nice. Some people mount it on the aft perches, saves tube.
Make a mockup using pvc/old bedsheet or whatever you have laying around the garage, so you will not order too much, and take maximum advantage of sunbrella witdth...(48 I think, not sure.)
