A brief update on Jim Baumgart's Channel Island Cruise: My wife, kids and I met up with Jim Saturday evening, 7/30, in Dana Point. Jim was on the first leg of his 3 week cruise and we were headed to Catalina Island as part of a 5 day cruise. We had dinner with Jim and swapped some sailing stories before hitting the sack in anticipation of an early morning departure. The next morning we set out due west to Two Harbors and motor sailed for 3 hours before the wind picked up to about a sustained 15 knots and began whipping up the seas. Jim tacked first to the SW as the wind was blowing directly from our destination. Two harbors is 40 miles from Dana Point so any tacking was going to make for a long day. I continued motoring for another hour until a rogue wave swamped my outboard and I converted to sail. I knew I could get to the island but without any motor was not sure what I would have on my hands once I got there. I tried to tack north of TH to allow a final tack into TH but could not point close enough to accomplish this. I turned around and headed SW, as Jim had done earlier, and sailed into White's Landing where I radioed the harbor master and he assisted me to a mooring for the night. Jim had already given up trying to reach TH and, as it turned out, was already anchored about 300 yards off my starboard. I tried the engine as soon as we moored and it fire right up (of course). We stayed with Jim the next two days as we moved up the island from Whites to Two Harbors to Emerald Bay. It was great spending time with Jim at Catalina as he has visited the island since he was a kid and shared a lot of local lore with us. Wednesday, 8/3, Jim set off on a course to catch the afternoon wind to the next island and we set out to Oceanside. I never had any more problems with the engine and we made the 60 mile trip in very light winds in 10 hours. The highlight of the trip on the way back was the California Grey Whale we paralleled for about 5 miles. Jim, I haven't heard from, but he promised to phone me when he could catch a signal. I know we all wish him well.
It was glassy Sunday before the winds arrived.

Here's a little update. I just heard from Jim tonight. He made it to Santa Cruz Island and also out to Santa Rosa Island. He spent today sailing back to Catalina and is happily tied up on the string line. Amy and Heidi will be joining him on Sunday with friends for some camping and boating on Catalina.
That is so cool that you see whales over there on the far side. Over here they are rare as far as I know and I have never seen one of the larger species, just lots of porpoise.
