Looks like my area is finally getting a big snow storm - Not that I am looking forward to it.
Got to get my boat cover out of my garage and down to the boat probably this Thursday. Too early for fine tuning the prediction but right now they are predicting from Saturday night and all of Sunday 10"-16" snow for Northern Virginia.

Not sure last time I used the cover. (Not last year.) I generally only consider putting it on my boat when more than 4-5" snow predicted. Thursday - The temps (F) will be in the 50s, Sat thru Sun - The temps will be 17F-20F. Not a good weekend to go sailing!

Larry, good move! Thursday should be a mild day to do your preparations.
The weather has been a bit tricky these past six week here in CT. We’ve had several snow-changing-to-rain events, and it’s been pretty cold in between. Ice is just forming on our rivers,
But this weekend the eastern half of the US will get some ice, deep drifting snow, and driving winds. It’s about on schedule …
Generally, once I haul Passage, in November I build my frame using 1” PVC pipe over the top of the cabin and cockpit, and secure my tarps over them. It mainly keeps out the deep snow, but when the wind blows, some snow can get into the cockpit.
I imagine by Monday after shoveling out the snow at the house, I’ll go check the boat. Going to be cold all next week, so I might not be able to clear out the ice.
Old man Winter!

Cover is on!
I am not too concerned about the boat - More concerned as to the severe cold weather predicted for all next week (as you indicated) and if the snow storm knocks out electric at home. It is going to be extremely cold all week - Could freeze water pipes! Then again, maybe everything will be fine!
Now that my boat cover is on, I have to dig out my electric and gas driven snow blowers out of the shed and get them ready to go!

So far, snow prediction is 12" at the boat and 14" at home. The storm is mostly going west to east but some movement north as well. I did not check prediction for New York/Conn/Long Island Sound - What is latest for your area?

Good to hear you got it covered. It sure was nice weather here yesterday for mid-January.
I usually prime the snowblower a few days or weeks ahead in case I need any parts. They tell you to clean or replace the spark plugs and grease the rotors each season. If you get light fluffy stuff, you can even use your leaf blower!
Power! A friend has an F-150 and he hooked a 1000W inverter to the battery to power lights or heaters during a power failure. I have an old 2400W gas-powered generator that I have to double check today.
Mostly, if you get icing you have a better chance of losing power, but I think it’ll be all snow in your area. We’ll see…
Between NYC and Boston they’re forecasting 10”-18” of snow with periods of sleet on LongIsland, Newport, and Cape Cod.

Here is the one thing I do not understand regarding icing predicted. The forecast in my area is for some rain/icey conditions and then a lot of snow. But the weather temps are anticipated to be 17F-23F the entire time. So, I do not understand how there could potentially be some rain or wet snow when you would think with low temps it would be completely snow. Unless perhaps the upper atmosphere is a bit warmer?

I think I bought an extra belt for the snow blower...or was that for a lawnmower? That is what I have to check on. Changing the spark pugs is a good idea! Since I infrequently use my gas snowblower, I have neglected annually changing the oil and spark plugs. I'll do it this time around. Good you mentioned about what you are going to do!

I have had the same question about how can you have freezing rain when it is snowing and temps are in the teens. But, last night a local meteorologist on TV explained that if you are in a coastal area there can be pockets of warmer air aloft. When snow hits the warmer air it turns to rain only to freeze when it hits the cold ground. Now I know, but it still does not change the fact I have to shovel the snow and deal with the ice!!
