Hello:

We recently bought a 1996 C250. The water pump at the head sink seems to be directly connected to the air filter at the galley sink, rather than to the water tank. Of course no water is coming through. Everything seems to be installed as designed. No word about the water systems in the manual. Anyone know what’s happening?

You don't say if your system has an electric pump or manual pumps. I don't know if an electric system was offered as an option on a new C250. I don't recall any C250 owners here saying the electric fresh water pump on their boat was factory installed. If your boat has an electric pump, I'd guess that it was an owner modification, and that it was either installed according to the pump manufacturer's plan, or possibly to the previous owner's own plan.

In either case, a pressurized cold water system can be very simple. Here's a link to an article that tells how to troubleshoot a fresh water system. https://www.boattrader.com/resources/troubleshooting-boat-fresh-water-system/

Here's an article that shows a basic plan for installing an electric fresh water system. If you omit the water heater and hot water supply lines, you can see that the basic cold water system is very simple. https://www.sailmagazine.com/diy/upgrading-the-water-systems

Personally, I don't favor a pressurized system on a small boat. Your water tank is small and an electric pump can empty it quickly. You can't just turn it on and let it run as some do in their home. A foot pump leaves both hands free, and it only runs while you pump it.

I'd guess that when you referred to an air filter you meant water filter. I suspect a line runs from the water tank to the water filter, and it's split so that one line runs to the galley sink and the other runs to the head sink. If water can be pumped from the galley sink but not the head sink, then the pump and spigot in the head probably need to be replaced.

Others here know more about this subject than I, and maybe they can help.

Thanks, Steve. It’s the original hand-pump system. What I referred to as “air filter” I guess is an air vent. It’s right next to the galley sink pump.

Timely post - thanks for the response Steve. I'm in the process of replacing the stock hand pumps on the head sink and the galley sink. Head sink hand pump leaks a bit and the galley hand pump is toast. I've been trying to decide to whether to go with an electric pressurized system or the foot pumps that are offered on Catalina Direct. I was leaning towards foot pumps for the reasons you mentioned but wasn't sure if the installation/retrofit would be too difficult. Has anyone installed foot pumps on their C250? Thanks

My C250 had this in the galley sink (installed by PO).

It's simpler to install than a full pressure system, but still gives the benefit of an electric pump. Might be worth considering as an alternative.

EDIT: I had mistakenly thought that this faucet included the pump. It does not, you must purchase the pump separately. It is a little simpler because it is not pressure-sensing. It gets on-off signal from the switch in the faucet, and the faucet does allow flow control. Note that with this faucet, you would need a separate pump for galley and head - you can't use one pump for both like with a pressure sensing system. My C250 had the electric faucet on the galley only - the head was the original manual pump.

Pump and faucet types I've used successfully in two boats. It provides water on demand in the galley. It is not required not to alter the head's hand pump
