We got our boat really cheap. Very dirty. But it cleaned up well. And it had wheel steering. For a few years I have hated this part of the boat, sloppy rudder with no feel. The rudder would move back and forth about 5 inches on its own. Lots of sawing back and forth on the wheel top make it go straight. Decided to look at the steering in the aft compartment. Turns out both backing nuts had fallen off the cable on the wheel and the two other nuts had backed all the way out. The cables were connected by a few threads. I tightened them up per Edson- wheel centered with brake on and took 3 inches up on each eye hook. Lubricated the main pin they connect to with teflon. Now the boat tracks straight, tacks like a dream and the rudder is tight. I feel very stupid, and lucky. Check your wheel steering connections regularly!

Glad you fixed the problem. Maybe a little Loctite on the nuts wouldn't hurt?
