OLarryR	Posted - 10/22/2020 : 18:52:55 After 15 years at a Wash DC Marina, I motored this past Wednesday, about 25 miles downriver, to Robin’s Nest’s new home at the Quantico Marina. Started around 9am in fog, against a rising tide, my speed averaging 3.2 knots (on a handheld GPS). Increased throttle/speed a bit as the Fog started lifting around 1030am but not gunning it and then about an hour later after passing high tide, then average speed increased to ~ 4.6 knots (with about 1/2 knot attributed to running with the tide). Winds in the morning (with the fog) was perhaps 3mph headwind and increased (when the fog) lifted to about 10 mph headwind. I never raised the sails since the winds were primarily from the south, - All the tacking would have made for a much longer trip. I arrived just outside the Quantico Marina just after 3pm making it about a 6 hr voyage. I completed the trip primarily on my 3 gallon tank (which was close to but not completely full at the start of the trip). but as it was getting pretty low with about a mile or so to go, I switched to my 6 gallon tank. Will be sailing tomorrow, though, early fog is forecasted.

Especially from you - You have so many posts with discussions between you and your boat, as though, your boat was alive...and has a conscious.....and you are buddies...and all this time Poor Pu has to suffer with someone else’s boat name. Well, at least Pualani Nui looks well taken care of....and looks like you have a good fall/winter project ahead of you.
oldengineer1949	Posted - 11/13/2020 : 06:51:44 Yeah, shame on me, poor Pu has had her previous name (Windbourne) stuck on her aft quarters ever since I bought her. I hope I can spend some time this weekend with a heat gun and gentle scraping, and get that name off. I have new nameboards and a router, so stay tuned, Pualani Nui should be properly named soon.

After Paul (Hunter 25) talked to me down at the docks and indicated another Cat 25 owner was looking for me, when I left the finger slip, I was checking out who that might be ? I saw two Cat 25s. But I did not see the name on the hull of one of them and I suspect that was your boat since the other Cat 25 closer to the gates has a different boat name than yours.

I took a "mental health day" this afternoon, and went down to the marina, pulled some very necessary maintenance on Pualani Nui, then walked the docks for a bit. Sure enough, there was Robin's Nest, on the same dock, just 10 slips up from Pu! Can't wait to meet up with y'all in person (six feet away, of course chuckle).
OLarryR	Posted - 10/24/2020 : 08:21:18 In the DC area of the Potomac with DC on the east side and VA on the west, a DC registration is necessary for boats at slips on either side. But south of the Wilson Bridge, Maryland is on the east side and Virginia on the west side. Boats required to get registration from the state where the boat is docked. So, in the Quantico Marina, all boats with VA registration decal/numbers except mine with DC decal/numbers. I checked online and VA allows those that have switched states and have a current year decal, have 90 days to register the boat in VA.
glivs	Posted - 10/24/2020 : 06:52:20 Fantastic Larry ... a whole new world to explore! But it appears your homeport is in Virginia but you'll be doing most of your sailing in Maryland. Does that complicate licensing?
OLarryR	Posted - 10/23/2020 : 12:29:02 Fog this morning, so I hooked up my fenders to a cable between the two finger slip cleats. Had a turnbuckle at mid length to take up the slack. Went sailing for a couple of hours and then refreshed my exterior teak with teak oil. I’m going to button up the boat ad cover the teak with sun tells covers and head home.
OLarryR	Posted - 10/23/2020 : 12:19:24 I have contemplated switching marinas for the past year or two. The river is fairly narrow especially during low tide when heading south (for a couple miles). North, the river is okay across the river regardless of the tide but only about 1/2 mile wide and there is a low bridge perhaps 2 miles North but unlimited distance South. Been sailing these waters for 15 years, so new waters is appealing and the river widens significantly further South. The DC marina is closer to home, so that was the major reason staying there. But the marina has significantly raised their fees as two large waterfront condos were built adjacent to the marina - One completed and people moving in; The other will probably be completed in November and now providing tours to prospective owners. A percentage of those moving in will probably fill the remaining vacant slips, hence, marina fees going up. Two big factors increase my dockage fee by about $1000 to approximately $4700/yr - Two price increases since last January and now basing dock fee on boat length or finger slip length, whichever is greater. Before this year, dock fee was based on length of boat. Quantico Marina is at the Quantico Marine Base. Since I am Navy Dept retired, I can access the Base and slips were available. Dock fee for my boat is just under $2000. Less than half the cost of the other marina. Travel distance to the DC marina was about 40 minutes. Travel to the Quantico Marina is about 1 hour. I also have a work friend in the slip opposite me, so that was also a benefit. He has a 2004 Catalina 32 that he bought 3 years ago. Before that, he had a 19’ ODay which he sailed for about 30 years.
