Is there a noticable difference changing from retractable rudder to a solid rudder?

The C-250 rudders and their generations have little if any relationship to the C-25. These are totally different boats, with different transoms and sail-plan/keel dynamics. Catalina went through several rudder "generations" to improve C-250 handling issues it didn't have with the C-25 because of the different boat design.

If you decide you want to go to a solid rudder let me know. I have what I assume is a 1st gen solid rudder ('79 C25) and really need a kick up due to the shallow area I dock the boat. I have to pull the rudder off to get in. Maybe we can work something out.

I have sailed with , a kick up, 1st gen long and 3 gen solid rudder.
all on the same boat, 250 wing keel. { #411 ] there was a noticeable difference between all of them.
the diff. is the amount of weather helm.
Rudder 1. lots of helm.
rudder 2. boat (sp) wallered around from side to side, still had weather helm.
rudder 3. normal feel, could even now use the autopilot. { this is what i have today, and like it.]
all the above had rigging set the same. [ stock, not mast rake Fwd. ]
but as stated in your other e mail, 200lbs. of sand up in the bow.
with all that said, i did try an old Hobie trick with my kick up
rudder. sand/file of the top fwd. part of the rudder, allowing the rudder
to kick under the boat more . took off 1/2 to 3/4" of material.
If you do this,only take a little off at a time 1/4". it works, and you will notice a diff.
when you get to the correct amount removed.

You are correct. It was a solid rudder vs a kick up rudder.

If by retractable you mean a kick up rudder?
I have had both, the old kick up rudder was great, as I sail in shallow waters.
I bought a new kick up rudder from Catalina Direct, it is about 4 to 6 inches longer or it goes deeper in the water.
With out the ability to kick, I would be unable to sail at low tide getting out!
