6 hp is supposed to be the max for the Capri. A 2 stroke is going to be a little lighter. Recommend you put a backing board or some type of reinforcement on the transom, it's flexible. I ut a good size piece of starboard on the outside and the stainless brackets that Catalina Direct sells on the inside. Makes a handy place for the tilt pin when not in use.
I have a 2-stroke, 3.5 hp, long shaft, Nissan with built-in fuel tank. Works great for racing because it is very easy to take off the transom, and there's no gas tank to deal with.
But it takes full throttle to get 5 knots, so for deliveries or cruising, you may want more juice. Still, I did a 20 mile motor up the coast with no problem. But the 3.5 has no reverse gear. And mine didn't even have a neutral. So, getting out of a tight slip requires a bit of coordination.
Overall, the advantages of the 3.5 far outweighed its shortcomings.
If fact, we traded a newer 5.0 hp for it straight across and always felt we got the better deal.
