Just thought I'd post a couple of pictures of Pie Sees 2 'racing' off Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. We came 1st in the short race around to the beach but that may have had to do with the fact we were the only one in it! The long race around the whole island is just too long (and potentially rough) for us. We came in 8th out of 9 boats on the race back. We found that we kept up pretty well with the bigger boats until we got into bigger seas which when beating upwind really slowed us down. However we were only a few minutes away from being 5th so it wasn't too bad. Still we had lots of fun which is what it's all about!
Yes, they were handicapping and I thought we were doing ok until we got into the bigger seas off the north coast of the island. The next smallest boat was a J-30 and the boat that won was a Beneteau First 47! We were well ahead of some bigger Oday's and other cruisers until we hit the bigger water. I guess that's where size makes a difference beating upwind.
I've found that on handicap we can compete with the big guys downwind and on a reach, especially in light air under spinnaker. As you have found, upwind in rough seas they walk away from us.
Great photos, the sails look good and the trim is spot on!
