Hi All, I bought a 1981 Boomaroo 25 (Aussie built Catalina 25) about 18 months ago and have just taken it out of the water for the first time. The plan is to service the swing keel, check sea cocks and anti foul. Just before haul out it had started taking on water under the floor in the heads - definitely salty. Now it's on a cradle in the yard I've looked at the keel and have discovered that at some point the original owner has drilled right through the keel bolt holes and put long bolts through with nuts. I don't know how he sealed them and unfortunately can't ask him as he is in his 80's and has some dementia. Has anyone on here had the same done to their keel bolts and if so how are they sealed? Can you still use the four long threaded rods to lower the keel at the front? Any help would be gratefully received

Welcome to the Association, Barry. Before you start lowering the keel, make a cradle out of 4x4 lumber to hold the keel upright after it is lowered. Be sure it is well-braced side-to-side as the keel weighs 1,500 pounds. Remove the keel bolts and insert the threaded rod one at a time. Then lower the keel by turning each nut on the rods one turn at a time. It will take a while!
