During my trials with a leaking thru-hull in the bilge, i managed to fill up the boat with water up to the floor. the leak is gone or slowed for now. however, i seem to have a bit of water on top of the ballast tank between the top and cabin floor. the tank must have a slight dish shape.
i was thinking of putting a 110v (have slip power) fan for a few days in the v-berth to pressurize and dry out the area. does anyone have a better (perhaps less dangerous) suggestion? Has anyone mounted a bilge blower in this area?
i was pulling it out with a sponge for a bit before i had to leave for the day, but i want to be sure I've gotten it completely dry (which i can't be sure of with a sponge). the water has been standing for a few weeks now, so i'm not convinced that it will dry on it's own and splashing around while sailing hasn't moved it into the bilge.
while my hatch does leak from rain occasionally, the intrusion is a leaking depth sounder in the bilge compartment. the boat filled with water twice because of a malfunctioning float switch.
it looks like growth plugged the leak over the last month, so i'll wait till i haul out in the fall to pull depth/knot senders in the bilge. replacing both units and with new bedding
bilge pump was replaced and all new tubing run, so i think (fingers crossed) i'll be fine through the rest of the season.
I don't think it's wise to trust that your float switch will keep your bilge pump running properly till the fall when you haul out. And I definitely wouldn't trust a marine growth plug for a leak to keep my boat afloat.
