Has anyone connected a Raymarine ST 1000 up to a GPS and been able to sail to a waypoint using NMEA output?

I found out the Humminbird does not output NMEA info. I bought a Garmin 54DV and I finally got it hooked up and can now navigate to waypoints and routes.

I am planning a week to 10 day trip from my home (Holiday Island, NC) to Manteo, NC then to Frisco, NC.

It depends if the GPS and the Autopilot both use the same NMEA standard. The latest is NMEA 2000 but most of the devices being sold use the previous NMEA 0183 and older devices may have NMEA 0182 or NMEA 0180. You have to compare which standard each device uses. My GPS and VHF radio both use 0183 and communicate well, but my older Raytheon Autopilot uses 0180 and it will not communicate with either.
