I'm ordinarily not a superstitious sort. I renamed my Catalina 25, and haven't done the renaming ceremony......yet. Since renaming the boat: 1) I've had rotator cuff surgery 2) The CDI internal jib halyard parted all the way up the at the top. I'm going to have to get the boat yard to make that right with a lift they have. 3) I've developed a leak of about 3 gallons a day. The packing around the drive shaft is leaking seriously. That's scheduled for repair today. 4) The starter button for the inboard doesn't always work. Sometimes I push the button in and the starter won't kick over. I hit the button 3, 4, and 5 times, and the engine will finally turn over and then start. I'm replacing the starter button this week but had to pay $32 to get it here in time for the holiday weekend.
If I perform the renaming ritual this weekend, do you think that will end the curse for me ?
One more piece of information, the boat is a 1986 Catalina 25. It's 40 years old, with dubious maintenance. I only paid 6K for it, so I think I'm still ahead of the game, I'd just rather sail it, than repair it.

With all due respect to the Honorable Lord Neptune, there's another deity who rules over all: the nefarious Lord Murphy, whose infamous Law inevitably applies sooner or later despite our best preparations, and whom shall not be molified by any ritualistic sacrifice or ceremony. Better to save the damn champagne to drown your sorrows when it strikes. Sorry Nep' old buddy.
The trouble with a destination - any destination, really - is that it interrupts The Journey.

Mine was nameless when I got her and never really went through a real naming ceremony ... so far so good. But then I have some campaign in the fridge ... I might as well drink it this weekend to celebrate my good luck ... so far!
The 50' catamaran I used to crew on was on its 3rd name. It seemed that everywhere we went the wind was on the nose. On the off chance that it would help, I did a de-naming ceremony for the first two names and then a naming ceremony for the current name. Strange as it may seem we never had a wind problem after that...

AHHHH................... The leak was the stuffing box. Not only is the leak gone, but there is plenty of packing left in the box for future tightening. The messenger line to the jib halyard is replaced. All is good. I'm not a superstitious man, but nevertheless, I don't see any reason to tempt fate. I'll do the renaming ceremony this weekend. It's a great excuse for drinking and watching fireworks.

You better capitalize Neptune for starters and pour a bottle over the side to appease him. A silver medallion, silver coins hard to hard to find, under the mast is also expected.
