The original compass was unusable. Cloudy, difficult to read. The light did not work. I installed a new Ritchie Sr2 Marine Venture Compass. Very happy with it. LED (blue) back lit, very visible anywhere in the cockpit. This model is one of the few models that you can mount to a non-vertical cockpit bulkhead.

I was not happy with the plastic mounting bolts that came with the unit. Instead I used some SS bolts from the inside. (I checked to make sure that they were not magnetic). It comes with a mounting template, but you have to be very careful to get the mount holes properly lined up. It also came with a rubber gasket and warned not to use any sealant or adhesive. No leaks so far.

Compass looks great. I went with a Plastimo and I am equally pleased.

What was the calibration procedure like? Did you do it with the boat on the trailer? I'm wondering what all the steel in the trailer would do to the compass while you're trying to calibrate it?
