Old Bombay II - Stereo & Speaker

I decided to install the stereo under the starboard bench seat, because it was out of the way (you don’t hit it walking around) and it was easy to install. I put the “front” speakers on either side of the table in the cabin and the “rear” speaker on either side of the cockpit in the stern.

The installation was straight forward, but during the first year I had the boat I discovered that if the stereo is playing and there is any wind, it is hard to hear someone’s hail from a passing boat.

This spring I added the switch in the cowling. It is a simple relay that controls the back speakers switching the leads from the speakers to 8 ohm resistors. (The resistors protect the amps in the stereo).

The only problem I had installing the switch was that the speakers were sealed in the cockpit and wouldn’t come out. (If you are thinking about doing this do it when you install the stereo not as an after thought)

The solution was to have my youngest daughter crawl through the battery access panel and cut the switch in from inside. I am much too large to get in that area but she managed fine. Once in place it was a simple job to splice the switch leads in place.

The system works well. When I want to hail or hear a hail, I reach in throw the switch and the “rear” speakers shut off.
