I got in touch with Bellpat Marine today and ordered the new sheaves. The lady, Sally, I think she said, said that her husband has been very ill and she was catching up on orders now. Can somebody who has done this replacement tell me any secrets you know and also if there is any additional hardware or tools I will need to make the changeover. I'd rather have everything on hand than go through the "oops, I forgot the gilhickey" bit.
There is a plastic 'seperator plate' that goes between the sheaves... mine was pretty deteriorated and I made a new one out of some 1/8" moly. Might have something handy for that.
I did replace mine with the aluminum one from CD but when you see it you will realize that it is 15 cents worth of metal and one minute with tin snips. However it is always nice to have one in your hand. My old one had de-laminated, I never really figured out what it was made of.
Received the sheaves from Bellpat Marine. Looks to me as if they are sized for 5/16" line. I would rather go with 3/8", not for strength so much, but just because it is easier to handle and work with. Has anybody used 3/8" one on the Bellpat sheaves? Any problem with the line jumping off the sheaves?
Sorry about those two extra halyard posts. I am barely computer literate and apparently pushed the wrong button not once, but twice. Old age is a demon.
Lordamercy I feel stupid. I can't figure out how to delete them and I don't want to make this mistake again. Can you be a little more specific on how to delete them. Sometimes I wish I were a teenager. Oh Heck, lots of times I wish I were a teenager. But most times I don't.
Having a Forest Gump moment? It is OK we all do it. Any time you post anything there is a trash can icon that is visible to you, in a normal post it is at the top with the edit and reply icons. On a topic it is there in the list of topics in the header of your topic title. Once a topic has been replied to you can no longer delete it. so if you don't do if fairly quickly the you lose the ability. You still have one topic that has no responses so you can delete it, look for the trash can at the far right side.
Well, I replaced the sheaves. As everybody said, piece of cake. Although I dropped them so many times that I'm glad I had the mast on sawhorses. I think this would be a difficult job in a bosun's chair swinging from the spinnaker halyard. Wouldn't like that. The old ones were unbelievable. Two were steel, so corroded that they would not turn, and two were plastic or nylon, probably, and the wire halyards had cut right through them so that if they did revolve, they did so as eccentrics. My masthead fitting already had an aluminum spacer in it which I was able to re-use. I would make substantial bets that not only the sheaves but the halyards were original, 1979. Another good reason for occasional inspections.
