Hey all - I'm thinking of trailering the 25 to Baja in the fall. Anyone done that? Either san Carlos-mainland side, or the Baja side through La Paz, etc. I'd appreciate any comments, suggestions, or advice! Thanks
Excellent narrative about the fellow's Potter 19 Baja trip ... we too are interested in a winter sailing escape in the Sea of Cortez ... would start from Az so we could go down the mainland or Baja sides. Would like to hear from anyone with Baja sailing experience
Baja cruising was one of the venues I orginally had in mind for my C25 too.
Another inspiration for Baja was one of my co-workers (now retired) who trailered his C25 (inboard, diesel wing) down there every season for years.
He used San Carlos as a 'homeport'.
There's freeway all the way down, (no nasty Baja roads) excellent facilities and services, and large American presense so English was commonly spoken.
While you don't have as many islands to explore as on the Baja side, or the remoteness of the Baja-side desert, he said that you could stay busy cruising a C25 for years before you exhausted the venues close to San Carlos.
On a good weather window you can cross over to the Baja side, but he said to be sure to leave a generous extra time allowance as the crossing can be 'closed' to smaller boats by a 'norther' for a week or more. Most of the folks who have bad experiences (troubles) are the ones in a hurry who can't wait out a blow.
Well, it looks like we're planning on dragging the 250 down to baja for a few months for our winter escape. Lots to learn and lots of resources out there; I was there several years ago (landlocked) and it looks like the development of the tourist infrastructure has continued.
There are many websites devoted to informing baja trippers (most I haven't looked at in detail yet). Here's on with some nice pictures and useful links:
