2 weeks into our recent cruise I ripped out the marine head and holding tank and replaced them with a porta potty. Less salt water smell, less frequent need to drain and more availaible storage etc. Now that the boat is back on the trailer I need to remove the thru hulls, plug and smooth out the outer hull. Suggestions and information on possible problems etc would be appreciated. Got out my West System Handbook and got some ideas. Interesting note was that the pump in the forward head for the sink (which was set up at the factory for salt water) had written on it " For fresh water only". With the sink, pump and water line removed that area is so much more functional
I removed the fittings with a 90 grinder with a cutting blade. Use a hack saw blade to saw through what was left of the metal pipe in the hole. One cut on each side and drove it out with a punch or chisel. Fill and fair . Do a search in site . I have posted this several times beofre.
An easier option would be to remove the seacocks and cap the thru hull.
Do not trust the seacocks to be in acceptable condition without hoses on them. When I changed out the marine head for a porta pottie two years ago I thought I was fine to just close off the seacock. No way, the 25 year old valves leaked badly. I didn't notice the problem until a few hours later and water started appearing on the cabin floor. I only had to hunt for a minute to find a completely full settee.
The advice from the local boat yard was that a future owner will appreciate the thru hull and to just cap them. Which I did. I threaded a nut on the thru hull to make sure it stays in place and then the appropriate bronze cap.
