www.earth.google.com provides gps accurate satellite images of the earth . . . some areas in amazing detail. You can stick virtual pushpins into the images ('Placemarks' on googleese) that are similar to waypoints. In the future, Google Earth (GE) will output gpx files that a gps can read.
I've written a small utility that allows you to import the GE files into Garmin Mapsource ver 6.7 . . . the 'Placemarks' are now waypoints and my utility will create a route if you wish.
I use this to map scenic, back road motorcycle (my other avocation) trips and have found a new anchorage on my lake that is near perfect . . . completely sheltered from weather and wakes. It's not suitable for marine navigation but is a lot of fun to play with.
You can download the utility at www.parentware.org There is a link at the bottom of the page that points to a zip file with an install set in it.

Sounds like a cool utility you wrote! I need to get some software and a cable for my Garmin. :o
The Google maps/satellite is very cool. They have much of the United States and selected cities overseas in 67cm Quickbird II imagery (courtesy of Digital Globe.) What they don't have in Quickbird they have in approx. 10-meter imagery. (Largely the rest of the world.) I remember when Google Maps first started (seems like only months ago! eheheh) and all they had were maps of CONUS.
For people like me who like to make larger mosaics, be aware that Google Earth distorts the images somewhat, so if you try and mosaic those images the edges won't line up. Google Maps, however, does not do that and so is better for making large images. :)
