My Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke can burn around 3/4 gallon an hour wide open which pushes my boat at or above hull speed of 6.3 knots. No way I can burn a gallon an hour pushing hard, wide open, into current.....
At 5.3 knots or so per hour, I am doing what seems to be 2/3 throttle, and she burns around 1/2 gallon per hour. Great cruising speed, IMHO.
Any other opinions regarding keel up or keel down when motoring? I didn't notice any difference in centre of gravity when I cranked my keel up and I also didn't notice any difference in speed...I tend to crank the keel up and motor when, like last weekend, the wind and waves suddenly built up and a lightening storm appeared.
Let's see- I do about 1/3 gallon an hour. Just shy of 7 knots an hour. 23 gallons on board. That means about 21 knots an gallon or a range of about 483 nautical miles. Assuming I can get that much beer in the fridge. I love driving my C34!
As a "test" last Sunday, I motored about 21 statue miles UP the Columbia River from St. Helens to Portland. I have a Yamaha 9.9 high thrust. Both the knotmeter and the GPS were showing speeds that probably averaged 6.1 knots or so. Current was quite light or nearly non-existent.
Anyway the 21 mile trip took exactly 3 hours at wide open the whole way. I was FULL when I left, and the 2 gallon portable gas can just filled it up when I came in. So...wide open: 2 gallons in 3 hours, (2/3 gph) 10.5 mpg. Happy camper I am. BTW: I ran away from other C25s with 8 hp 2 strokes and a 28' Cat with diesel. I was in about 40 minutes before them. This set up is great for motoring; heavy for racing, though.....
Yes I know I wasn't being "efficient"; this was a "test".
