Just when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing! ,I just installed a new keel cable from Catalina Direct including All the turning ball ,pin etc and this weekend my wife and I were out sailing -This was the third day that we had the boat out with the new parts..When we felt the keel tap something- keel was not all the way down- and my wife went to wind it up and than that was the end of the keel cable . Brand new-GONE. Luckily we had other club members help us get the boat on shore to a trailer where we Had an extra cable just for an emergency and installed it! I called CD today to ask about cable life and they said Lowell would call me back as he is on vacation, but somebody in the shop said they had NEVER had that problem! I intend to send the cable to them when lowell gets back. Any one else had this issue? Thanks Alan & Eileen

Bad Luck Alan, I seems to me that I remember reading on this forum, sometime in the murky past, about CD having this problem with cables failing. This seems to happen at the sweedge connection. CD does such a good job that I hate to even bring this up. I personally have ordered replacement cables from Catalina not CD, no problems yet. I would let Lowell get back to you before getting too excited. Make sure that they sent you a C25 cable and not a C22.
I'm sorry to hear about your cable failure. I'm glad you were able to get the boat onto a trailer without too much trouble. I agree that, if it was correctly installed, and the cable failed somewhere other than the attacment points, then Catalina Direct has a lot of explaining to do. These cables are a critical component. The quality control on them needs to be very high.
quote:
I seems to me that I remember reading on this forum, sometime in the murky past, about CD having this problem with cables failing.

That incident certainly stuck in my mind too. I have always ordered my replacement cables from the Catalina Yachts factory, and have not had any failures.
Thanks For your input, I will let you know what happens when I speak with lowell. I will keep everyone updated. I am very concerned about this as this is a VERY important part of the boat! Alan & Eileen
two years ago my brand new cable (from CD) failed after 4 months (salt water) from corrosion right inside swage fitting. Contributing factor probably galvanic action (I didn't have zincs then).
Orion is a 1981 boat, soon to be 25 yrs old. I bought her from the original owner. He had replaced the wire once in 1999, and I replaced it again in 2003 (along with winch, ball, hose, etc) as a matter of preventive maint. When I haul for a bottom job in Sept., I will replace the hanger assembly and add the spacer kit. That's three wire replacements in 25 years, all the time in salt water, keel up all the time. Probably should have been done more often, but the boat was not used hard, and never raced.I would expect to do the wire next haulout, in two years from Sept. Fair winds, ron SW FL
I have read the info in the forum for a number of years about the keel cables. I replace mine every 2 years. I replace the ball too. I purchase them from Catalina and have not had a problem. One time the cable did show wear when three wires were broken. I do not know why they broke, but I believe the cable rubbed against the winch. I replace it every 2 years for my piece on mind. On another boat I had years ago the cable was 10 years old and did not show any wear. I raise the keel each sail because my slip is shallow.
