I looked in the specificatons guide and it tells me my main sail is 295 square feet, however looking at the dimensions, the Luff = 27' 8" and the foot = 9' 7", that doesn't calculate to 295.
Assuming 28' by 10', that is 280 Sq feet, then remove the area of the rectangle that is not sail and it has to be less the 280.
Does anyone know why Catalina posts 295 as the square footage and if this is accurate, or what the actual square footage is?

The 295 is the sail area of the hypothetical main and 100% fore triangle. No one ever has that number up, it is a reference number. Your 110 head sail has a short hoist, your main has a large roach, the numbers simply allow comparison calculations to be done on sail area:displacement, miansail: head sail, etc. What is it you really are wondering about? I used to know a guy who was driven to the brink of insanity because his floppies would not format to the advertised capacity, (your hard drive doesn't either). Lesson; don't sweat the small stuff.
A friend has a main sail that is 24 luff with a 10'6" foot, but is says it is only 133 sq foot. It's about 3 feet too short in the luff for my boat, but otherwise it is golden, even has rope on the foot. I guess my real question is even though the sail is 3 feet shorter than the requirements for a tall rig, it is almost the exact measurements for the standard rig. Do I buy it for $200 or pass it by. Full battens, double set of reefs, 6 oz dacron. Problem is he is out of state so its not a try and buy situation.
Thanks for pulling the right question out of me!!!
The bigger question is how big is the roach. With the foot extending to 10'6, even though the boom has some room, the roach might be way too big for the aftstay.
I have an oversize roach on my tall rig main which hangs up on the backstay - about 3" of the top batten. Very annoying in light air. A full roach on a main that is 3' too short for a tall rig should not hang up. On the other hand, you are sacrificing potential sail area by buying this sail. I wouldn't buy it, even if the price was right. Get yourself a decent main that fits properly large roach or not.
