I have four 6x23 Defender fenders (bumpers) that
have the air-valve to blow 'em up.. One is particularly soft, so when I tried to pump some air into it, there was mucho resistance on the pump - and I couldn't pump any air into it.

Is your needle valve pushed in all of the way? If it is not, it may not let air into the fender.

I have several types of fenders. Small ones for rafting up. I cover these with what is left from my winter sock collection. I cut the sock off above the heel and slip them over the fender to protect mine and mt neighbors hull. One large long for fending off and my dock fenders used in the slip. I keep them clean with a little commet cleaner.

SofScrub (?) with Bleach cleans them without scuffing as much as ordinary cleanser. I haven't tried fiberglass polish on them, but it couldn't hurt too much. Won't last long, though...

Unless the boat and the fenders are both very clean, you're much better off without them (the fenders, that is, or maybe the boat too, depending). At the same time, you find that fenders are hard to keep clean unless they're new and it's almost impossible trying to keep your fenders new. On big fancy boats you see cloth fender covers that I assume you launder. That would work, but scrubbing the fenders just makes them worse.

A few years ago I received some fender cloth covers as a gift. They are great. They keep the fenders clean and the hull doesn't get grimy from the dirty fenders. If you try the covers, you'll never be without them.

With the valves in some fenders the trick is not to put the needle in all the way. I used to work at West Marine and when our vendor changed the valves without telling us it drove us nuts until we figured it out. If the pump just won't pump try backing the needle out.
