I was talking to a C22 owner who was new to sailing and was having trouble raising his mast. I told him about the A-frame system that we used and he was really interested. Does anybody know what modifications would have to be made to use it on a C22 if any? Or maybe someone has a link to that kind of information. Thanks
Here are detailed pictures of a mast raising system I made for my Cat 22 last winter. Aluminum frame that fits into a foot and a half stainless pipe that is mounted on each base on each side. Easily raise and lower single handed. Very stable. Uses block and main sheet to raise.
I made a conventional A frame with parts from Home Depot for under $10. I used steel electrical conduit and a couple of bolts. The pipes were easily bent to shape and drilled. They bolt to the forward lower bases and must be free to rotate 90 degrees. There is an eyebolt at the A. A line to the main winch clips on this and runs through a block at the pulpit. The Jib halyard also clips to this. The jib halyard is tied off at the base of the mast.
It works, winch it up and down. Under $10. Make it in an hour.
I made my mast crutch with 1.5 inch PVC and it was too weak. But I slid the PVC into a aluminum tube I had laying around and that works great. I just tie the crutch to the stern pulpit or set it on the dock. If you have helpers you don't even need it.
