Not to put an early chill on this beautiful season (with apology and sympathy to those of you in Katrina's wake) but we received our haulout/winterizing order form today. The marina offers to drain and winterize the water system and holding tank. Is it worth the effort to try to save some $ here and drain the fresh water ourselves?
We don't want to add RV/Marine antifreeze because you can never get rid of that taste. I studied Turk's post (3/30/05) and responses, which mostly deal with contamination. We have a 2 inch cap on the top of the tank which would allow siphoning or pumping out the excess water. But, how do all of you deal with water in the lines and sink pumps?
How about the exhaust end of a shop vac? That should do it!
The Forward tank on my 2003 250 is accessable from the front bow. I took the entire tank out to clean the scum from it and then reinstalled. The shape of my holding tank allows for about 1 inch of "sump" meaning to get all the water out you either have to take off the filler hose and pump out, or easier yet, just remove the entire tank and empty.
I'm not sure why the exit lines are 1 inch from the bottom, but that one inch of water will remain in the bottom over the winter if not removed.

Thanks! Blowing them out may clear residual water from the faucet pumps. I didn't see any way of being sure because they cannot be left "open" to prevent damage from freezing.

Maybe to avoid pumping sediment? But that's why it's important to open the tank and siphon or pump out every last bit occasionally. DanM
