Now that my sailing season is over, (lake Superior and the North channel were great!!) I'm back to the renovation of Gracie's boat.
I'm using C22 stanchions on the Columbia 22 and need a bit of advice.
Since you all are familiar with the catalina bolt pattern, I need your help with a decision. The Columbia has a raised tread pattern on the anti-skid about 1/8 inch higher than the deck. It leaves a smooth strip along the rail where rainwater and spray can find its way down to the scuppers. Mounting the stanchion completely on the anti-skid leaves a third of the deck outside the rail. My solution is to put some SS washers on the outside edge under the plate as a shim to keep the stanchion plum. this would also leave space under the base for water flow. does anyone see a problem with this? My other option is to epoxy some 1/8 in ply in the shape of the base on the outer deck to form a solid base. the drawback I see is that water will not flow down the deck and will have time to pool up and find a way down the bolt holes and into the cabin.

Any thoughts?

I would us a different material. Lexan comes to mind. Make a lexan shim and seal it down. It would be easier than making a metal shim.

John,

It seems to me that the washers - stainlness of course, would do the job. I wouldn't use would of any kind, even teak.

Thanks Al and Tom,

I looked over the layout and I think I have enough room to bolt the stanchions down on the anti-skid. When I looked at my C25 I realized that I had placed the plates on backwards. The reversed plate puts the stanchion pipe an inch closer to the rail and gives me the little bit of wiggle room I was looking for. I would rather have a firm connection with the deck.

I'm still going over my notes Al, I have your part, do you know when John needs our copy? Probably right away knowing how it was with my last article. glad to see your ridgid boom vang piece made it. I really enjoyed reading it, very informative.
