When turning the keel crank to bring the keel up, the gear used to 'click' to hold the keel cable as you go on cranking, as in "click click click' with each turn. Now it doesn't click...is there a simple solution to get the hammer back to holding the gear with each turn? What did/do I do?
If you're turning the right way... the source of the clicking noise is a little spring-loaded pawl that engages the gear on the secondary shaft. That's what causes the brake to engage and hold the keel up.
You may be able to use a mirror/flashlight to look up in that area to see what's going on. Any serious examination/messing around with it will likely require winch removal.
I found that unbolting the steps and swinging them out into the cabin made winch maintenance much easier (only a few bolts). Your mileage may vary.
Does the brake still work, i.e. does it arrest the keel in the raised position? I would think that the ratchet provides a safety to prevent the keel from dropping. The absence of the "click" may indicate that this safety is missing. In view of the potential for damage from a dropping keel I'd (a) keep it down as far as possible, (b) call Catalina Direct for advise.
OK, from closer inspection, and comparison to a sister C25 at our dock, it appears there are bushings or spacers at the smaller gear, and these seem to be loose or worn. I'm going to take the winch/stair assembly apart tomorrow to get to the bottom of it. I'll let you all know what I find: or !
OK, I took my winch out, actually ordered a new one, and learned a thing or two. First - if your winch doesn't hold (my brake would not hold...after a few cranks up the handle would slip off and >whirrrrr!< the keel would drop back down...fortunately only a 'little bit' so no harm done.) The keel winch is NOT something to take chances with, so I ordered a new winch from Catalina Direct for $109! Secondly - there's a catch! You've got to be careful about the new winches vs. the old. The new ones require a different connection for the handle fitting - and it only comes with a new handle - oh, for another $45! I'm going to try and get CDirect to allow me to buy the fitting, since I ALREADY have a stinkin' handle. The worst thing is that the winch was delivered, but the handle with fitting I'm told is 4 weeks out! AARGH! Wouldn't you think it would just all come together as one part? >sigh<.
Yep, that's what I'm doing, and probably will go out sailing today - I can't stand staying in the marina while the wind is so nice! I'll just have to play in conservatively and stay away from shallow spots. It's just frustrating that one cannot get the fitting with the winch.
