In case you haven't heard yet, Nigel Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" is not in it's third edition. It is 40% larger than the previous edition. It has lots more stuff on electrical work. List price is 50 bucks, but I got mine from Amazon.com for 33, with free shipping and no tax. A friend in my sailing club is washing boats if a person donates 100 bucks for Katrina victims. I gave him my old edition. He deserves a reward (of course one person asked if that included washing the bottom, what a jerk)
Great book, the bible of boat maintenance, I also bought mine @ amazon and donated my old edition to a new young sailor. Did ya'll know that Nigel has a "cruising handbook" that is equally as useful and full of great info...
I also have his cruising handbook. It has the best explaination of the various ratios used to describe sailboats that I have ever seen. Things like sail area to displacement, or displacement to length, yadda yadda It also gives examples of boats and their various ratios.
Oh but if we all could afford a blue water cruiser, and the time to use it
