Seems like the rudder on the C25 is a weak spot. Has anyone considering adding a skeg to support the bottom of the rudder??

For those that have added a third gudgeon where did you add it?

Small keg!

Actually its a structure that protects the rudder or prop of a boat.

This illustration of a Valiant 40 shows the skeg just ahead of the rudder.

I don't think the rudder on a C25 is particularly weak, given the nature of the boat. This is not a world cruiser needing protection from whales and reefs.

I'm not an engineer, but it seems to me that if you want a boat with a skeg, you really need a different boat. Skegs are integral parts of the design and construction of the boats they're on, not stuck on as an afterthought. The C25 is a great boat for what it is -- a pocket cruiser/racer for relatively protected waters. Check your pintles and gudgeons annually, and enjoy your boat!

I would not consider something that lasted (in my case) 20 years to be a weak spot. I purchased the "Mighty M" almost a year ago and paid more attention to cosmetic things. Last Monday my rudder snapped off at the waterline. 4 months ago she was hauled, bottom inspected, scraped, blasted and repainted. I did not pay much attention to the hairline cracks along the rudder's waterline...now I'm paying for it. Possibly, if I took a close look at the rudder 4 months ago I could have extended it's sailing life...or maybe not.

Just out of curiosity, has any of our crowd ever added another pintle/gudgeon fitting in betwixt the two regular ones, just to add a safety feature: the belt and suspenders syndrome? Would not help in those rported situations of the lower part of the rudder breaking, but would help in those other situations where the lower fitting failed. Fair winds, ron Orion #2343 in SW FL

Regarding a third gudgeon...

I installed a third last year after several rudder problems. It is about a third of the way up between the existing two. Paul on Sparkey has a third one too.
