This may sound like a crazy idea, but bear with me. Marinas in long island are charging anywhere from 35-50 dollars a foot for winter storage... plus any other fees they decide to tack on - such as mandatory powerwashing, cleaning, etc. Further, a lot of the marinas won't let you work on the boat - only employees of the marina are allowed to work on it.

Therefore, I have been researching the idea of buying a trailer and storing it somewhere over the winter. While I don't mind shelling out $$ for a trailer, I've had trouble thinking about where exactly I would put the trailer and the boat. Since I live in NYC and in an apartment building, putting the trailer on the side of the street isn't really an option.

Does anybody know of any public storage places or lots in the NY/CT/NJ area that would rent out a parking spot for a few months and occasionally let me work on my boat, or am I resigned to paying 40 bucks a foot for winter storage again at the marina? Sigh... must... move... south...

It has been about 17 years since I lived in NY but I believe if you get far enough out of the city excluding Long Island you will find U-store it places where people keep their motor homes and travel trailers and boats. Most facilities are fenced in and have a security gate you would open with a code. I couldn't begin to speculate on price since things have changed a lot but perhaps north of Brewster, or in the Danbury area you might find something. I recall a lot of storage west of Pawling.

try checking some of the Pennsylvania recreational lakes. I had a pal years ago who stored a living trailer winters at one of those sites, fairly reasonably, pretty common thing to do. Don't know why they would object to a boat for storage, probably have some already. Fair winds, Ron #2343 Orion srsk in Venice, FL

I've just done a bunch of research on this subject. I don't know about storage lots, but I can guide you towards a few marinas that are more reasonable than what you're describing on the Sound. Once you travel up the Hudson a bit, things get more tollerable. I'll be keeping my boat at Haverstraw this winter. It's about 33 NM North of the Battery and was the best compromise in terms of price vs. facilities and services available.

If you e-mail me, I'd be happy to share what I've found with you:
