First, although I have only a Cat 22, this forum is FANTASTIC! It has already prepared me for the work I'm doing - removing my keel, sandblasting and expoxy encapsulating and putting in a bushing to solve my "clunk."
Second, I have read many threads on fairing - how to do it, etc. But my question is, "What is it?" What does it mean "to fair?" And how do I know that I've "faired" my keel properly? I think it has something to do with shaping it to a particular shape so that it flows through the water in a certain manner, but what shape should my keel be "faired" to?
I will be posting photos of my work as other posts' photos have been an IMMENSE help in my preparation - I want to pass on my experience to others as those before me have done.

The better keels were originally designed to have a foil, or elongated teardrop cross section. Yours is probably that way -- the C-25 swing keel is for sure. There is a math formula for defining that shape. When your keel's cross section conforms to that formula, it's fair. And what is that formula and where can I get some, you ask? Search the Web for "NACA_Generator.zip" (or something like that, the "NACA" part is what's important) and download it.

After you unzip it, fool around with "NACA_generator.EXE" and you'll get the general idea. When it asks you for a 4-digit NACA number, try numbers in the range of 0012 to 0014. Check back if you have further questions.
Catalina 22s now come with a fiberglass encapsulated perfectly faired keel. I would look very hard at buying a new keel before I started grinding and filling a cast iron keel. If you live near a Catalina dealer they will send the keel on one of his boat deliveries and the delivery should be close to free.
Essentially you want to fill in th holes and sand it smooth. When you get into one design fleets, J-24, Capri 25 etc, they have a template that has exact measurements you must adhere to. But for your purposes, if your just cruising, sanding it down to the metal and applying some filler, then sanding that smooth, should do you just fine.
