I am chatering a Gemini 105M in Key West over the December holidays, and wondered if anyone has any suggestions/ideas about the area. Any thoughts on itineraries, places to go, see, eat, anchorages, etc would be greatly appreciated. We'll be out for 5nts/6 days. Thanks in advance for your input. Hi CB Every year I go down to the keys for 2 to 3 weeks sailing in the winter. I'm on my way out now to go to work When I get home tonight I'll post some ideas. Have you considered going to the Dry Tortugas? and then Loggerhead key. Fleet 89 had a trip there last May. When are you going? Do you plan to sail up the Keys? Anchor out? Stay in Marinas and day sail? I see you are from Lake Norman. That's where I found my boat, and sold my 22.
Hi Frank, We are going for about 6 days, leaving Dec.27 returning the 1st or 2nd of Jan. Have considered Tortugas, but probably will stay closer to land. Probably anchor out a few nights, and maybe a marina for a night or two. I was going to go pick up some books this week, and try and come up with some itinerary ideas. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris
Tortugas is a big commitment and lots of preparation as you must have all provisions for the entire time, and must be prepared to motor a long ways if you have a schedule. 18 gallons at least.
I don't like the area around Key West, too crowded and expensive. I like the middle and upper Keys. Launch ramp at Pennekamp is great. I go to the La Siesta Marina on Islamorada, MM 80.5. There you can launch, have a slip, and park your truck and trailer. No facilities except a not too fancy shower. Laid back marina a block away from traffic, and quiet. Right near Shell and Lignumvitae keys which are my favorite anchorages Get the guidebooks by Frank Papy, and by Claiborne.
I agree with Frank, I enjoy the middle Keys area more than the touristy areas in Key West. But heck, anywhere down there is a great get away. Beautiful clear warm water and great winds. Just returned from a week of oceanside sailing in and around Marathon, just past Islamorada. Key Colony Beach to be precise. I was fortunate enough to rent a half duplex there with dockage. Put in at the Boat House pay ramp for $10 at approx MM 53. Sailed out to Sombrero Reef, great snorkeling and diving there. Last year I stayed on Conch Key and enjoyed another great week of sailing mostly gulfside. Got home on Sunday, glad that I didn't pick this week for my vacation as Hurricane Wilma is targeting the Keys as I write this. I hope that you have a good time there. If you can rent a car on land, there is a unique place on Big Pine Key called the No Name Pub, a great little hangout with good food and reasonable prices. The locals should be able to direct you as it is off of the beaten path.
