Was looking at my bow and stern cleats yesterday. They are the stock 6.5 inchers that came with the boat. Would like to go to a 9" but here's the problem (and question).
I can not get access to the backs of the fittings. I would expect a backing plate to be accessible from below or through the anchor locker. What is involved in replacing these cleats? Do I just remove the screws, replace the cleats and put the screws back in? What's holding them?
Help please !!!!
This site is a GREAT resource full of VERY helpful folks.
Shawn, Check this out. Forward cleats may be accessible through inspection cover located on the forward verticle part of the anchor locker. Stern cleats may be accessible through battery compartment if your have the cover located on the verticle wall behind rear bunk.....

I'll dig around some more. I didn't get back into the battery compartment (not a contortionist and not sure I can get through the access port). Hey, a job for my 10 year old!. As for the anchor locker, guess I need to check again, but on first glance, I didn't see it - maybe if I emptied the locker.
I replaced my forward cleats on the Capri 25 a couple of months ago. They will not have a backing plate on them, mine were 1/4"x2.5" flat head bolts, with a 1.5" washer, a lock washer and nut. I ordered a replacment cleat from Catalina Direct, The old ones were some kind of plastic, not worth a crap. I broke the one on the starboard side when pulling the boat up to the trailer. The new ones were the same measurments over the phone, but when I took them up to the boat, they were a good 1/4" off, I filled the forward hole with 5200, rotated the cleat around, then redrilled. The cleats in the front were very hard to reach, and the aft ones almost took a contorsionist to get to. Keep looking
I'm thinking of keep my cheap, junk, and too small bow cleats (because they are so hard to get to) but adding a large cleat either right before or right behind the anchor locker hatch. It could be through bolted into the anchor locker space with a big, generous backing plate.
A single large cleat would be great for anchoring and can also be used for 2 mooring lines.
The stock cleats on my 79 are too small for holding decent sized anchor line.
I'm planning on putting one large cleat in front of my anchor locker. I live in hurricane country and have been more than exposed to the problems of the small existing cleats. However, I'm amazed by how solidly they seem to be attached. I decided I'll just augment what is there rather than remove something that seems so well connected.
