hey, OK, as you may know from my recent post, my keel cable is down to two strands. I was able to lower the keel down all the way and thereby prevent it from falling and causing damage. I ordered the necessary parts from Catalina Direct and I was contemplating getting a diver to replace the cable while the boat is in the water. However, in looking at the new cable and pin, it doesn't seem to be what I remember the old one to look like. It has a forked end and a fairly short pin with cotter pin that would attach to a single post. (some of these terms I am winging it on) Unless my memory is off, I thought the forked piece was attached to the keel with the cable attaching to the relatively longer brass pin in that fork. Now, I did call Catalina direct and they said that the cable they sent me should be right for my boat (25 Catalina 1984 by the way) and even if it was retrofitted with the set-up I described this cable should fit, I may just have to use the longer pin. What do you guys think? What about the diameter of the old brass pin? Do any of you know what that would be? I don't want to pay someone to try and fix this and not have the right parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Larry.

Without actually seeing your parts, I think Catalina Direct told you correctly. As for the clevis pin, it should be stainless steel, not brass, and yes, you will need the longer one. For now, consider reusing your old one until you can get hauled out. Meanwhile, have the diver bring the old one up so you can measure it. Or one of us may have a longer pin available for measuring, in which case we'll let you know what size (and material) it is, and then you can get a new one before the diver goes on the clock. As I recall, the pin diameter is 3/8".
Yes, both the old and new cables have a swaged fork terminal (the same cable with the same terminal in fact). The fork straddles the old style eye-bolt, or fits inside the new style attachment fitting on the keel.
Speaking of replacement cables, be really sure the new one is the same diameter as the old one, and at least as long. There should be at least a couple of turns of cable still on the winch drum with the keel all the way down. In the past, I've ordered my swing keel cables a couple of feet longer than stock from the Catalina Yachts factory, just to be sure plenty of turns stay on the winch to protect that wimpy cable attachment clamp from accidently releasing the cable end.
I have the keel connection where the cable fits inside the keel connection. I would like to replace the clevis pin. This is a longer pin than the one that comes with the new cable. Is the pin an item I can get at Boat US? Catalina does not have the pin as a separate item. I know it is stainless. Is it any stronger because it needs to hold the 1800lb keel? I have also placed 5-8 washers on the pin to keep the cable from moving side to side. This keeps the cable in the same place and I believe saves some wear and tear.
