Hey guys, I asked the question in the Capri 25 forum because I noticed the tack of the main connects to the gooseneck with a hook, and I wanted to know how one downhauls, and you all were kind enough to tell me that one doesn't do it that way on the Capri. But then after scanning numerous photos of Catalina 25s & 250s it appears that they have the same kind of riveted-on gooseneck. (Specifically ref: this photo on Arlyn's excellent site: http://www.stewartfam.net/arlyn/drifterbag.jpg ) I was just curious if anyone ever modifies the gooseneck so it slides in the mast track like it does on a catamaran.

The reason I ask is I've read a number of posts where people talk about various aspects of shaping the main and it seems like a lot of these could be rectified by rigging an easy-to-use outhaul (2 or 3:1) and like, an 8:1 downhaul, but the downhaul would obviuosly be contingent on getting the gooseneck to slide in the track.

Am I way off-base here? I apologize because 99.5% of all my experience is with beach cats but I'm trying to learn while saving up for the "boat where my wife can go inside when it's cold." And we can spend the weekend out on the water.

Warm regards,

Jim

Jim,

There were several (well, maybe quite a few) running changes during the long and successful production of the Catalina 25. Some of the older Catalina 25s have sliding goosenecks. The later ones have fixed goosenecks with perhaps a cunningham to fine tune luff tension underway. I happen to have (and prefer) a sliding gooseneck. I rigged a 4:1 downhaul, an 8:1 internal cascade outhaul, and a 6:1 vang. These may seem like high ratios compared to a stock C-25, but I bet they don't seem all that high compared to a hot catamaran!

I see. So if I were to get a newer boat with a fixed gooseneck I guess I could figure out a way to use my friend's mill and frankenstein-up a sliding gooseneck. Based on the numbers in the brochure it would appear the main has approximately the same sail area as a lot of Hobie mains so I'm thinking the gooseneck would be under approximately the same loads....

Anyway cool; this gives me something to chew on. If anyone else has a few cents to throw in I'm all ears. Or eyes, as the case may be.
