Looking for info on 80'era depth sounder meters. Ours has a "standard Communications Corp. Model DS-45 (Early Display very dead). What is a good substitute and what do we do with the 4" hole in the Cockpit forewall?
I took a 5 or 6 inch diameter, Cant remember, teak winch base and decreased the thickness to aobut 1 inch and then mounted to the cockpit bulkhead, and put a depth finder in the center, the small kind that is about 2 inches in diameter. The teak is a nice match to the rest of the teak on the boat. Otherwise, I would have had to get a very large guage to fill the hole. I also got a finder that shoots "through the hull" instead of putting another hole in the boat, and have had no trouble at all. FWIW. Dan 86.
quintjk, I have 4 inch Standard Horizon depth & speed instruments too! Last summer I thought I had depth finder problems and got an exact replacement from West Marine. After it arrived, I learned that it was just a bad wire and returned the new unit. I had the same dilemna because other brands are much more affordable but they are only 2-3 inches in diameter. I didn't know what to do with the 4 inch hold in my bulkhead! It would be great to lose those large white covers on the cabin interior and have smaller units elsewhere for sure. If West Marine still has them available, be prepared for sticker shock. The price was pretty $teep!
If I didn't already have a sizeable list of winter projects, I'd pull the Horizon Depty and Speed displays and re-glass the holes! Since they work, I'll wait until the crap out to tackle that project.

If just your display is dead, getting a replacement will probably be the easiest way to go since you wouldn't have to change the transducer or fill the bulkhead hole.
I called Standard Horizon in July to get replacement covers for my depth meter and speed/log. They no longer make them for the traditonal round equipment. The customer service persons response, "because of the increasingly wide use of chart plotters", led me to believe that inidvidual depth and speed/log equipment is not long for this world.
