Hello,

I've just removed all of the anti-fouling paint and some
Interlux 2000 from my swing keel. In many places, rusty
metal is now exposed.

The iron is too pitted to grind the rust out.

Can I get away with just treating the exposed metal with something, before adding a few coats of Interlux 2000 ??

There are a number of rust 'converter' treatments available. Phosphoric acid (marketed as Ospho) is one of the more common. Once converted to iron phosphate you can overcoat the rust.

Won't last forever, but then again, nothing does in saltwater.

Yes, I have heard of this product in other postings. I'll look to see if West Marine carries this Phosphoric Acid.

Will the acid hurt the remaining Interlux 2000 I have on the keel?

Just found a product carried by West Marine called Rust-Lock Metal Preg. It reads that it is Phosphoric Acid <i>Based</i>
